With July now being in full swing, I want to make sure I embrace the magic of high summer while social distancing. Just because I'm staying at home a lot, doesn't mean I can't make my weekends feel special. To be honest, my weekdays are still filled with a decent amount of anxiety and long to-do lists. Add in the non-stop news alerts I get from my subscriptions, and it creates the perfect emotionally draining storm. I'm getting better at managing those emotions, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't put more pressure on myself on Mondays-Thursdays. And that's where the cherished weekend comes in. Because weekends, now those are still precious and as carefree as possible with everything that's going on. The weekends tend to be when I let myself relax and catch up on fun. So here is my frugal, at-home staycation game plan for this weekend!
Friday Evening
- Pick up a bottle of wine and flowers to go with my healthy and delicious dinner. I'm going to make chicken kabobs with a side of broccoli. And now it's time to set the scene. Put flowers on the table, eat and drink from pretty tableware, play good music, and make sure the area is clean and clutter-free... that's how you take an ordinary dinner to the next level.
- Light candles and settle in for a feel-good movie. Disney Plus is WHERE IT'S AT!!!
- Spa Time! I'm going to give my hands and feet a coconut oil treatment and then paint my nails while watching the movie and drinking wine. Then I'll do a face mask and hair treatment before curling up into bed with a poetry book.
Saturday Morning
- Morning self-guided therapy session using the Bloom and Sanity & Self apps
- Decorate the balcony with flowers for breakfast/coffee
- Read on the balcony while drinking coffee
- Try on new clothes and have a photoshoot
Saturday Afternoon
- I'm taking 2-3 dance/pole classes and will work on my stiletto heels choreography! Ahhh! I'm so excited.
- Maybe run to target to look at home decor or convince my roommate to drive me to home goods.
Saturday Evening
- Photoshoot round two because taking photos during the evening in prime.
- If the weather is nice, I'm going to eat dinner on my balcony. Not sure what I'll cook. Maybe turkey burgers. Or maybe I'll order out and walk to pick it up. Either way, I'm dressing up!
- I'm leaving the evening a little open because if the weather is nice, I'm going for a nice walk with a drink I'll make at home. If the weather is poo, I'll stay home and paint or start the illustration course or something like that.
Sunday Morning
- Tidy up home ... because cleaning while the apartment is quiet is really therapeutic.
- Get ready for brunch - I'm cooking brunch with a few friends because it's safer and cheaper.
Sunday Afternoon
- Cook brunch with friends
- Shenanigans - gotta keep the afternoon open and go with the flow.
Bunch Outfit Statement Pieces
Sunday Evening
- Prep for the next week while watching a comedy.
- Do some online window shopping because I have a long list of items I want to get to spruce up the home and have yet to bite the bullet and purchase any of them. Time to fix that and budget for what I want.
I know it's nothing fancy, but I want to challenge myself to have a fun weekend without spending a ton of money (other than on home decor that I'll buy on sale and budget for). My ideal weekend would be to go to a private lake house or beach house here in the NYC/NJ area, but I'm not on that level yet. So for now, I'll turn my weekends at home into a little escape. What are your weekend plans?

Happy Sunday my friends. I'm glad that we survived another week in the office. Life has been... interesting as of late. I don't know about you, but I'm going through a pretty big transitional phase. And this has been my first chill and therapeutic weekend in about a month. I truly needed it. Because I live in the NYC area, I'm constantly pressuring myself to experience as much as possible and go, go, go! For the past month, I ignored how important it is to slow the hell down. I hope you carve out some time this evening to do just that. I also hope this post encourages you to create a serene atmosphere in your home this evening while you dive into the links below. And if you're interested, scroll to the bottom of this post to read about my shit show of a life. I guarantee it will make you feel better about your own.

Shit Show Chronicles - Part 1
Weekly Highs and Lows
Lows
So... I was quite far from my best this week/weekend. I have been borderline distraught for the past two weeks, so I did what all self-respecting adults do... I drank instead of dealing with my emotions. Ooops. I go through waves of wanting to embrace my emotions and wanting to run from them. Well, this week was a fine example of why I shouldn’t run from them. Not only did I put myself in physical danger by overdrinking, but I ignorantly threw myself at men who blatantly showed me that they do not value or respect me. Did I handle these situations with class and grace? You bet your sweet ass that I did not! I went into meltdown mode instead of Michelle Obama mode. At least we live and we learn right?
This was also the first weekend that I've spent alone in over a year. Since becoming single, I have purposely stayed busy. I was constantly out with friends and crashing at their places to avoid being alone. So Friday night, I challenged myself to go home after my dance class and stay in for the night. Surprisingly, I had an amazing night to myself filled with Chick-Fil-A, journaling and binge-watching Sex and the City. I fell asleep extremely early (because I'm apparently an old maid now) and woke up feeling refreshed and on top of the world.
Saturday night, I was not so lucky. This is when all of the self-deprecating thoughts came rushing into my mind. I fell into a little spiral and woke up a few times throughout the night, but I realize how much I needed time to be sad and process my emotions. I woke up in a negative headspace, but once I told myself "hey girl, this is just a temporary emotion and it will pass," I was able to move on with my day and have an amazing Sunday! I used to be in the place where I was terrified to be single again, but I'm soooo much happier than I was a few months ago because I know that I am strong enough to take care of myself now. Before, I was really bad at taking care of myself.
Weekly Highs
I learned 3 things about myself during this week's trials and tribulations...
1. I CANNOT DRINK if I’m severely upset about something, and this week I was irrationally devastated over a guy and my career. Now I realize that if I drink before dealing with my issues, I will make bad decisions... every single damn time. Add a lack of sleep and additional hormones from my period to that equation and you get two manic episodes in the course of 5 days, featuring yours truly. I'm happy to report that I'm no longer beating myself up about these episodes; I’m actually quite relieved that I came to this conclusion. This is something I’ll probably deal with for the rest of my life. I now see what happens when I bottle everything up inside and then add alcohol on top of it.
2. I also realize that there’s nothing wrong with being sad or upset from time to time. I’m so terrified of going back to the mental place I was in during 2015-2017, but I’ve significantly grown since then. I’ve made similar mistakes as that version of me, but I’m not bed-ridden over guilt or self-hate anymore. I totally contribute this new mental grit/strength to the therapy sessions I sought out during 2018. I also still want to prioritize therapy and figure out how to make it fit into my budget. Paying that hefty price sucks, but it’s critical for me to take care of my mindset in order to thrive. I thought I could do it alone and I can’t. I am fine admitting that now.
3. My recent breakup is affecting me more than I thought it would. I have not used the past three weeks to focus on my dreams; instead, I’ve turned to men, alcohol and partying as a distraction from what I actually want in life! Why? Because I’m terrified that I’m going to fucking fail. The ironic part about this fear is, I'm allowing it to control my actions. Therefore, I'm acting like an immature, psychotic shit show. I’m not ok with that. I’m better than that. So now it's time for me to clean up my act. And I'm fully confident that I am doing just that. Obviously, I'm going to still make mistakes, but I highly doubt I'll make the same ones again.
Thank you so much for spending part of your day reading this post. I hope my messiness hopes you feel less alone if you've felt like a mess lately too. Sending you so much love and joy! Until next time my friend.

Hope your day is off to a great start! I'm currently writing this post from a coffee shop in my neighborhood. I haven't worked from a coffee shop in a while, and I almost forgot how much I love this ritual! It's so blissful to take two hours for myself and block out the surrounding world. I used to fear to be alone with my thoughts because I didn't know how to be kind to myself, but now alone time feels like a luxury. I hope you can sneak in a little alone time this weekend as well. It truly is quite refreshing. I also hope you find the links below to be helpful, entertaining or inspiring. I know I do! If you have any links you want to share in the comments below, I'd love to know what meme, article or video has put a smile on your face this weekend.

Weekly Highs:
This week was a whirlwind! A lot of stressful incidents happened over the past 7 days. But oddly, I’m in a much better mood than I’ve experienced earlier in the month. I guess a lot of shitty things happening all at once helped me re-adjust my perspective and focus on what truly matters and why gratitude is so important. The best part of this week was the fact that I proved to myself how resilient I can be.
Yes, I cried a lot. Yes, I let 95% of my weekly to-do list fall through the cracks and beat myself up about it. Yes, I have a loving boyfriend who comforted me and told me everything was going to be ok. Yes, I called my best friend Kendra to help cheer me up. I know I am blessed to have their love and support, but at the end of the day, we have to depend on ourselves in order to see the light again. Words of comfort from other people are nice, but they don’t magically change your mindset. Only you have the power to focus on the positive side of things. And unfortunately, that’s a skill that we all have to work at every single day if we want a sustainable positivity. I’m just grateful that all of my loved ones are safe and sound, I have a source of income in my dream industry and I can start planning to redecorate my apartment for the spring.
Weekly Lows:
I want to keep this part short and sweet because:
a.) I don’t want to sound like a whiny little punk and
b.)listening to me complain won’t help you on your path to success.
But I will briefly list all the poo things that happened in my life this week so you know how unperfect my life is. This way, you don’t feel so alone when poo things happen to you.
- Lost my Chanel wallet in a cab
- Was overcharged $152 by the terrible restaurant/bar Tijuana Picnic in the LES (which refused to answer the phone, return my email or speak to a manager when I went back to the bar).
- One of my immediate family members in Georgia was rushed to the hospital (this emergency made all of my other problems seem very small)
A Note on Expectations
April 18, 2018
April has definitely felt like a month of cleansing. Not only have I been spring cleaning my bedroom in small sections, but I started going to therapy this month. You know that saying “April showers bring May flowers”? Well, I’ve been experiencing a lot of emotional showers this month. I’ve cried the entire time during my therapy sessions. At first, I was pretty ashamed about this and felt weak because I couldn’t control my emotions… but after talking to my counselor and a close friend, they helped me realize two things…
- I shouldn’t be ashamed of crying because it means I have a lot of passion for things in my life.
- I put a shit ton of expectations on myself and on the people in my life.
So for the rest of spring, I want to do an experiment. I’m going to stop putting expectations on myself to perform a certain way. I’ve literally NEVER done this before. Mainly, I want to see if I can still perform well without adding the psychological drama that my world will fall apart if I don’t put that pressure on myself. Can you guys relate? We millennials get a bad wrap, but I think our generation puts a lot of pressure on ourselves. I push myself a lot, you push yourself a lot. I’m pretty exhausted from it, and I bet you are too.
Between expecting myself to excel in…
- My PR career
- My blogging career
- My fitness goals
- My fashion and beauty standards
- My pole dancing class
- My social status
- My financial status
- My romance life
- honestly, the list just continues
I realized that even though I told myself that I didn’t need to be a perfectionist, my mindset and insane anxieties are the actions and reactions of a perfectionist. I’ve just been in denial about it, and it took some therapy sessions for me to realize it. So I have A LOT of work to do in order to let go of the pressure I put on myself. And I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to let go of the desire to be perfect entirely. But I have to try.
My expectations have been making me miserable! So I’m going to liberate myself and stop judging myself for not being perfect and not living up to my expectations right now. I hope you take on this challenge too. You and I will get there eventually. And now for the hard part... putting these words and plans into action. It’s probably going to be waaaaayyy harder than we think, after all, old habits die hard. But together, I know you and I can figure out how to let go of our extreme expectations and let excellence follow us naturally.
Thanks for reading, and I'm wishing you lots of love and serenity.
Shop the Look: This section includes affiliate links.
I randomly found all of these items while thrift shopping or during sales, so I encourage you to go scavenger hunting this weekend. But if you don't have time to shop IRL, here are some similar pieces you can buy on the world wide web.
I wanted to share another more personal post today, but I also wanted to share a cute look. So I’m doing both in this post, frankly because I feel like it. So whether you relate to this post, find inspiration in the outfit, or get a laugh because you think I’m a sad little peasant, I hope you walk away feeling a little bit better today. :)
*Oh, and there is some cursing in this post, so if you're offended by foul language, this isn't the post for you.
I’m proud to admit that I’ve always been pretty ambitious, and I’ve been blessed enough to be surrounded by hard-working, ambitious, talented people who inspired me and cheered for my success. Now that I’m 1.5 years out of college, my ambition is still there, but my strong sense of confidence and self esteem is not. What can I say? I’m not strong 100% of the time like most of my friends think.
I went from having a large community of cheerleaders physically around me 24/7 to just having myself as a cheerleader. Anyone who moves to a new city alone after college goes through the same thing. It’s a brave and exciting adventure, but it’s also terrifying to no longer be in your tight-knit community. In the real world, you’re thoughts of self-doubt are louder than ever before.
And let me tell you, I can say some pretty nasty things to myself. If anything, my inner voice is like a cheerleader from hell straight out of a 90's movie who’s sole purpose is to try to destroy my self worth and convince me that I’ll never have what I want, so...why bother.
But then I have to take a step back and remind myself that:
A) Telling myself these negative, false beliefs in a FUCKING WASTE OF TIME! I’m literally wasting precious energy on thoughts that don’t serve me or move me towards my goals. That’s not ok because (here comes the cliche but damn true saying) where intention goes, energy flows! Asnd here’s the real key. Are you ready? That nasty voice will always be there in the back of our heads telling us to give up. Telling us to play it safe. Telling us we can’t accomplish this goal. We have to accept that the voice will never go away, but we don’t have to listen to it. I named my mean girl voice Regina, and I tell her to shut up when she starts trying to break me down.
B) Instead of shutting down and cocooning myself in bed (which I admit I’ve been doing a lot lately) I should grab a pen and paper and figure out why I feel so overwhelmed. Even if you’re not a writer, I seriously advise doing this. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Purging the stress out is the best way to work through it. Want to avoid a hand cramp? Record yourself talking through it. I know there’s a lot of controversy around Joel olsteen, but homeboy gives some great advice. He once said that the same problems will keep showing up in your life until you confront and overcome them. Once those problems are literally staring you in the face, written in your journal, you’re more inclined to make those problems your little bitch.
C.) If I want to cultivate confidence and self-esteem, I have to take action! I’m not just going to wake up one day and feel like I’m killing the game if I don’t take small actions that will get me closer to the life I want to live. And please notice that I said SMALL. Sometimes I get a little bit list-happy and write down every single thing I need to do to accomplish a goal. I did that for my blogging/digital content creator career and you know what happened/still happens from time to time? I looked at that multiple-page list, and I shut the fuck down because it’s so overwhelming. Isn’t that ironic that how making lists in one aspect can free me and in another aspect, it makes me feel hopeless? After learning this lesson time and time again (aka me curled up in bed, ugly crying and too overwhelmed to get out of bed to even eat, let alone leave the house that day) I realized that I need to limit myself to setting small goals each day, regardless of how much I want to create an elaborate action plan.
D) And finally, I remind myself to ask for help! I reach out to my best friends who remind me that, number one, I can have everything I want if I get out of my own damn way. And number two, no matter what I accomplish, they will still love and cherish me. I have nothing to prove. And neither do you. I went to the amazing Girl Boss Rally this weekend, and one of my favorite speakers pointed out that we are already enough. We don’t have to prove anything to the world, and we have a purpose just by existing. What a lovely reminder that you’re already a rockstar and should chill when it comes to beating yourself up, right?
Confidence isn’t built in a day; it’s an ongoing project. I hope that this post encourages you to love yourself a little bit more and forgive yourself for not being perfect. Coming from a recovering perfectionist, it’s a good thing that we aren’t perfect. Perfect is fucking boring! I still struggle with trying to be perfect, but I’m getting better at letting go of the “perfect me, perfect life” mentality that I've held on to since elementary school. You will too if you take the time out each week to remind yourself that you’re a badass for going after what you want, no matter what it is. The struggles are just part of the process, honey.
Need more words of encouragement? I’ve linked some of my favorite self-esteem boosters below.

November Mood Board 2017: Simple Ways To Practice Gratitude
November 8, 2017
Oh November, you snuck up on us. The air is so crisp and chilly now. In my opinion, Fall is seriously enchanting. There’s a special magic in the air, and I want to spend this month appreciating is. So surprise! This months mood is all about practicing gratitude ( I know, super original) but it’s time for us to let go of the mistakes, pain and fumbles from this year and embrace this season of love, appreciation and celebrations. And here are three simple ways you can practice gratitude in 5 minutes.
1. Write Down Three Things You're Grateful For Each Morning
And I don't mean just list them out. If you want to truly benefit from this exercise, try writing a full sentence about WHY you're grateful for these three things in your life. That was, you reflect on them longer and tie more meaning to your list.
2. Acts Of Kindness
I know this isn't revolutionary advice, but most people forget how much impact they have on other people. Put down your smartphone while you're walking. Hold the freaking door open for someone, look then in the eye and smile. I'm telling you, that if we stop ignoring everyone around us, we will feel so much more connected to the world. There are so many ways to give back in our communities; there's a perfect fit for everyone.
3. List Three Things You Did Well Today
It can literally be as simple as, "I picked up the clothes on my bedroom floor." You deserve to celebrate every single thing you do well. I struggle with beating myself up (I essentially bully myself), so I'm trying to be better about reminding myself of how far I've come and how success is built on small victories, not one large triumph. Reminding myself of my past mistakes isn't helpful and is a waste of energy. All we can do is learn from the past and keep on trucking in the right direction.
But before I end this post, I want to take a moment to honor the 26 people who lost their lives this weekend due to the mental health and gun control crisis our country a facing. I’m calling it a crisis because so many lives have been lost in senseless violence. Regardless of your stance on the two issues, here is how to help the families that suffered in this tragedy.
Even $5 goes a long way and lets these families know that we are here to support them.
This family lost 10 members in the Church shooting
This GoFund me has been highlighted by CBS as a trustworthy GoFund Me account for the Church. There is a PayPal portal on the Church's website, but it has been difficult for anyone to make payments due to high traffic. I think it's disgusting that there are people creating scams and trying to benefit off of this tragedy , but at least you know your money is going to help a community if you donate to this account.
I hope you guys have a lovely Wednesday. I'm so grateful that I get to see another day, and I'm trying to focus on choosing joy and gratitude regardless of the awful shit that pops up in my life. I hope you do too. Be blessed, and thanks for reading!
Weekly Brief No. 4: Sunday Reads
November 5, 2017
Cheers to another weekend that's come and gone too quickly. It feels weird that Christmas is basically here. On one hand, there's so much to be excited for, but on the other hand, I feel like I keep forgetting to savor every day. But hey, I'm working on it. Sundays are all about rejuvenation, so I hope my finds below help you rest and relax before another crazy Monday arrives. At least we all gained an extra hour of sleep thanks to daylight savings! So grab a glass of wine and get cozy. I hope you're evening is charming and restorative.

In an effort not to sound like a whiny bitch, I'll spare you the details. Whenever I feel super down, I jump on Google and search for coping mechanisms. There's something in me that compels me to search for a solution... always. During this Goggle session, I stumbled across this article: You’ll Be Happier If You Let Yourself Feel Bad By Cody Delistraty. It was a great reminder of what my favorite person ever (aka Marie Forleo) always says, "make isness your business and stop resisting!" I’m hoping that the more I practice embracing my feelings and not judging myself for being upset, the stronger I’ll become.

Wellness Challenge #3: Make the Most of Your Time
October 30, 2017
Is anyone else in shock that Halloween is tomorrow? So insane! I’m sad that October is over, but at least the weather is finally cool. It actually feels like fall. I am taking full advantage of the rest of fall. I’m even working on an end-of-fall bucket list that I’ll share with you guys later this week. As for now, it’s time for another wellness challenge! This time, I want to focus on cutting back on my Netflix binging habits.
I love a great weekend where I order seamless and binge a few shows (aka Riverdale). But I’ve noticed that I’ve been having these binge watching sessions on the weekdays too. And although it was a ton of fun blowing off my responsibilities this past week, I ended up being so anxious about everything I’ve been avoiding and feeing too overwhelmed to do anything... not healthy Nia. So for the next two weeks, I’m gonna schedule in my “do nothing time”.
I think everyone needs to rest and just not do anything every now and then, but since I’m working on multiple goals (ie. improving my health and fitness, making more money, running this blog after my day job, dating in the city, trying to network in my field, stepping up my style and beauty game and making more friends), I can’t afford to check out every single night after work, but if I block off one or two hours a day to unwind will help me relax without feeling guilty. Call me an optimist, but I'm pretty confident that scheduling these “I’m not doing anything right now” sessions is going to make a huge difference.
I believe penciling in this time will encourage anyone to take advantage of their downtime AND their productivity time! It’s definitely going to take a lot of discipline, but it will be worth it. Plus, you can always create a reward for yourself to help you stay motivated. I have my eye on a beautiful velvet jacket, so if I stay on track, I’m treating myself to it.
So now I want to hear from you! Maybe you haven’t been making the most of your time, but you have goals you want to achieve and things you want to do. It’s never too late to make a change. We are totally going to have everything we want, but like I’ve said before, it’s not just going to fall in our laps. I hope you take on this challenge with me, and I can’t wait to hear from you guys in the comment section below. Cheers to a happy and productive Fall!
Weekly Brief No. 3: Weekend Reads

This is a much needed reminder that I need to take time to do the little things that I love. We can experience happiness from the simplest things! So if you're week has been a little rough, take this weekend to relax and do the simple things you love. I know I am! Fingers crossed this will do the trick and help me feel re-centered. Happy weekend and happy reading!
P.S. Let me know what your favorite part about this post is. I'd love to hear your input, and if there're other topics you want me to share in these weekly round-ups, put it in the comments or email me! I'd love to start including them!
